Smithsonian Magazine’s Museum Day

Fort Concho will host the annual Archaeology Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, on the grounds and inside Barracks 6 and Commissary buildings at the site’s northeast corner off Flipper Street at East Avenue C. Members of the Concho Valley Archaeology Society will have dozens of interactive activities such as mock digs, ancient bow, and arrow shootings, face painting, atlatl throwing, and rock art. The event is free to all.
Self-guided tours will also be free Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. as part of National Museum Day, an annual celebration sponsored by Smithsonian Magazine, honoring the cultural contributions and connections made by the nation’s thousands of museums.
San Angelo is fortunate to have several museums that will celebrate the day with free admissions and activities. The Railway Museum of San Angelo (open 10-4), Miss Hattie’s Museum (open 2-4), the San Angelo Nature Center (open 12-5) and the Mayer Museum at Angelo State University (open 10-5).
