Field Trip Logistics for School Groups
Making a Reservation

Please call or email in advance to schedule your visit. We want your students to have a positive experience, so we try to limit the number of groups arriving on the same day.

We have a several types of tours available to school groups.  Click here to review what our tours involve and the cost for each type of tour.

Bus/Private Parking

Buses and accompanying personal vehicles may park in the large parking lot across the street from the Fort Concho Visitors’ Center.  Parking is free of charge.

Visitor Center

Please arrive five to ten minutes before your scheduled tour time.  Upon arrival, your group should report to the Visitor Center in Barracks #1 at 630 S. Oakes, San Angelo, Texas 76903.  Your group leader will check in, pay for your group and pick up all materials associated with your tour.

Water/Restrooms

Restrooms are located inside the Visitors’ Center, behind Barracks #5/#6 and behind Headquarters building.  Water fountains and a Pepsi vending machine are located in the Visitors’ Center.

Expected Behavior
  • Do not stand, sit, climb on, or lean against any ruin or foundation.
  • No food or drinks inside buildings, except closed bottles.
  • Use gravel pathways around the parade ground or building porches rather than walking on the grass, with the exception of the grassy area nearest S. Oakes Street behind the Bandstand.
  • Students must stay with teachers/chaperones at all times. No more than 20 students in the Visitor Center at a time.
  • Please keep in mind that Fort Concho is open to the general public during school tours and that we expect respectful behavior from all visitors.
Lunch Spaces

Fort Concho does not have a designated space for lunch, but the porches of Barrack 1, and Barracks 5 are available upon request. There are some public areas around the fort, including a few parks, with benches and shade trees.

Helpful Tips

Hats, sunscreen and water are recommended for everyone due to the West Texas heat and the uncovered walkways between buildings.  In addition, only the Visitors’ Center and Officers’ Quarters #4 are temperature controlled, so please dress appropriately.  Should you need to cancel your tour, please contact the fort ASAP at 325-657-4443 or 325-657-4444 so that we may reschedule your visit.

Accessibility Issues

Each public building at the fort is wheelchair accessible and accessible restrooms are located in the Visitors’ Center.  The fort has a golf cart available for use on a first-come/first-served basis for physically challenged and mobility-impaired visitors.  It holds 5 people plus the driver and need for the cart must be noted when making school tour reservations.

Souvenirs

A small gift shop that carries a selection of books, postcards, historic toys/games and related items is located in the Visitors’ Center.  If your group would like to visit the gift shop, notify the fort when you schedule your field trip.  Please allow no more than 20 students in the Visitors’ Center at one time to browse the gift shop.  In addition, a teacher/chaperone must be present at all times.  Allow for approximately 15 minutes in the gift shop for each group of students.

For more information, contact our the Education Department at 325-657-4443 or livinghistory@fortconcho.com.
