Buffalo Soldier Heritage Day
Buffalo Soldier Heritage Day honors and celebrates the legacy of famed Black Soldiers who served in the U.S. Army after the Civil War.
This year’s event will take place on Sunday, February 23rd from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm at the Fort Concho Commissary, corner of Burgess and Ave. C.
The celebration is free and open to all with light refreshments available. Sherley Spears, former president of the Fort Concho Museum Board and founder of the Buffalo Soldier Memorial Project, will give the program. She will cover the 2024 ceremony at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas, when Buffalo Soldiers of the 24th Infantry, unjustly court-martialed and executed as a result of a 1917 riot in Houston, were exonerated with new gravestones unveiled that noted the soldiers’ ranks, service dates, and home states.
There will also be updates on the Buffalo Soldier Memorial, time to visit the Memorial as well as the displays in the fort’s Barracks 1 Visitor Center, and news about future Buffalo Soldier related projects in San Angelo.
For further information, contact Sherley Spears at (817) 655-3670 or Fort Concho at (325) 481-2646.
