Christmas at Old Fort Concho

Kick off the holiday season by visiting Fort Concho’s largest annual event. Held during the first full weekend in December, Christmas at Old Fort Concho transforms the fort’s forty acres and twenty-four buildings into a winter wonderland filled with shopping, entertainment, food, displays, living history, children’s workshops, and of course, a visit from Santa.

Day Pass:
Adult- $7.00 Military/ Senior- $5.00 Children (7-17)- $3.00

Weekend Pass:
Adult- $14.00 Military/ Senior- $10.00 Children (7-17)- $6.0

School of the Piece: Artillery Safety Training Course

Fort Concho and the Loyal Train Chapter of the United States Field Artillery Association (USFAA) will be hosting the School of the Piece Safety Training Course February 7-9.
Cost for the training will be $50.00 for early-registration, or $55.00 at the door.
Participants are asked to bring their wool jackets to the training. Loaner jackets are available upon request (limited quantities).
Lodging at Fort Concho is also available upon. Please let us know if you will be staying at the site for the training when you register.

February 7th— 9:00 am Check-In/Registration opens at the Living History Stables Classroom (234 Henry O Flipper). TBA Evening Social/Supper.
February 8th—8:00 am Breakfast; 9:00 am Classroom Instruction; 12:00 pm Lunch; 1:00 pm- 5:00 pm Classroom instruction; 6:00 pm Dinner (chicken fried steak with trimmings) provided by the Loyal Train Chapter.
February 9th—8:00 am Breakfast; 9:00 am Field Instruction; 12:00 pm Lunch/Completion certificates awarded.

Buffalo Soldier Heritage Day
Feb 23 @ 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

In recognition of Black History Month, the local chapter of the NAACP and Fort Concho will host the annual Buffalo Soldier Heritage Day celebration on Sunday, February 23, in the Commissary building. The program will include a presentation by Fort Concho Curator of History, Cory Robinson, featuring original artifacts and uniforms used by Buffalo Soldiers in the late 1800s.

The event is free to all. Light refreshments will be served.

Baseball Heritage Symposium
Feb 29 @ 8:30 am – 2:30 pm

Sponsored by the local chapter of the Society for American Baseball Research, Fort Concho is hosting a Baseball Heritage Symposium, on Saturday, February 29, in the Living History Stables Classroom.
The program includes several presentations with topics ranging from regional baseball history to the 1919 Chicago Back Box scandal. There will also be a minor league baseball quiz! If weather permits, the fort’s vintage baseball team will play a baseball game (1860s rules) on nearby the Parade Field.
The program is free to all, and will provide morning refreshments and coffee, as well as pizza for lunch.

Campfire Story Night

Join us under the Texas night sky for an evening of storytelling and s’mores. Bring a blanket and/or chair, and listen to our storytellers recount untold tales about Fort Concho and the Texas frontier.

The event is free to all and will be held in the Courtyard (between Barracks 5/6). S’more will be provided.

Texas Archeology Society Ceramics Class

In partnership with the Fort Concho National Historic Landmark and the Concho Valley Archeological Society, the Texas Archeological Society will be hosting a Ceramics Academy March 28-29. The hands-on class event will provide a comprehensive background and understanding of prehistoric and historic ceramics from different archeological sites.

In this workshop participants will learn how pottery is made and used, how pottery reflects cultural traditions, and how archeologists use the ceramic data to understand the lifeways of people in the past. Participants will learn and practice the skills needed to recover important data from ceramic sherds, and be exposed to the application of ceramic data toward answering ceramic-based research questions.

Museum Day

Join us at Fort Concho for the Smithsonian Magazine’s annual celebration of boundless curiosity. The theme for this year’s Museum Day is Earth Optimism! To celebrate, the fort will have docent led tours, artillery demonstrations, and themed activities on gardens and compost! Learn about gardening at Fort Concho during its active period, color a compost coloring sheet, and create a biodegradable pot to plan some grass seeds!

Admission is free, but tickets are required.
Tickets will be available to download, February 27, 2020.
